Is advocating peaceful secession legal? New York/New England would make a pretty decent sized country and I expect fewer people would want to bomb Manhattan if it weren't part of the US. Let the midwest and southeast subsidize themselves for a while.


I grew up in NYC, and talk of secession started in 1975 (when we were begging for some portion of the millions NY donates to the feds to return and bail us out). Any serious talk of it now would no doubt provoke a second Gettysburg Address, laced with pieties, and several Marine battalions - because, again, of the money Washington would lose.
(Tellingly, in 1975 they dipped into the Indian trust funds to bail out NY. How ironic is that?)
